"suspend-to-disk" et edgy

Mon billet précédent notait qu'Ubuntu/Edgy supportait suspend-to-disk.

Debian to Ubuntu conversion

Today I converted my debian/etch box to ubuntu/edgy. With debian I ran a kernel.org kernel patched with swsusp2 to be able to hibernate. I expected to also have to run a swsusp2-patched kernel.org kernel with ubuntu. But actually, ubuntu/edgy comes with a suspend-to-disk enabled kernel! Just ask KDE to close session and you'll be proposed to "Hibernate Computer". I tried it and it worked first time. Very cool. I don't know yet whether ubuntu has special hibernate patches or if it uses the old swsusp code shipped in kernel.org kernels...

Jojo to play Linux hacker

Johane, listen carrefully little girl:

Dady recently got hisself a La Crosse Technology WS3500 weather station. It comes with a serial cable for connecting it to the home PC. You've already guessed it, the CDROM accompanying the station has no Linux driver, windows only. I'd like you to site down, take your keyboard, and cook up a nice, full-blown, Linux driver for dady. As programming is new to you I've started googling around for you: there already are two existing open source projects, Open3600 for the WS3600 station, and Open2300 for the WS23xx series. You have 3 months... Be strong, and to not disappoint your father.

ssh for dummies

This guy Kimmo Suominen wrote a good Getting started with SSH web page. Really good starting point for anyone interested in using ssh.

iBook doesn't wake up

From the very first day I installed Linux Ubuntu on my iBook, I've been having problems at resume time—iBook doesn't wake up, and no other choice than hitting the hard-reboot button!

Stopping and starting the HAL service, respectively, before suspend and after resume, as proposed here, improves things a bit but doesn't make the problem disappear.

Modifying the storage HAL config, as proposed here, improves things a bit further—gnome-battery-monitor does no longer crash every time the laptop goes to sleep. But still, that doesn't solve the problem, resume fails from time to time. And everyone knows how painful from time to time can be!

To me, the HAL stuff is one problem, but there seems to be another, kernel-related, problem. See Bugzilla Bug 1940. Applying that kernel patch turns out as a real success in my case.

I haven't experienced any resume problem over the last 10 days—since Johane was born. Gosh! That may be just her :-)
